①［義務・当然・必要］

〔…しないわけにはいかない， …すべき， …しなくてはならない， …ねばならない〕

**must

［S must do］(人は)…しなければならない(《正式》be obliged to)《◆(1) ought to， should より意味が強い. (2) do は通例【D】 動詞. (3) 義務・必要の度合は概して should， ought to， have to， must の順に強くなる. (4) 他の助動詞と共に用いるときは have to で代用する： He will have to meet her tomorrow. 彼は明日彼女に会わなければならないだろう》∥ John must shave every morning. ジョンは毎朝ひげをそらねばならない《◆話し手の命令を示す. John has to shave ... だと「ジョンは（ひげが濃いなどの理由で）毎日そる必要がある」》 / Mary says that we must let her know where we are. 我々は居場所を知らせねばならないとメリーは言っている《◆命令の主体は Mary》 / Must you go so soon? もうお帰りにならなくてはなりませんか《◆ Must you ...? はいらだちを込めた疑問文としても用いられる》 / We must take the situation seriously. 事態を深刻に受けとめねばならない.

**should

［S should do］(人は)…すべきである∥ It is sad that he should ［has to］ resign. 彼が辞職しなければならないのは残念だ / We should obey traffic rules. 交通規則は守らねばならない.

have to do

…しなければならない∥ I have to find myself a new house. 私は自分が住む新しい家を見つけなければならない / Everyone has to take care of themselves. だれしも体を大切にしなければならない / I had to pay duty on the watch I brought from Canada. カナダから持ち帰った時計の関税を払わねばならなかった / Much of the town had to be rebuilt after the war. 町の大部分は戦後再建しなければならなかった.

be supposed to do

［二人称平叙文］ …しなければならない《◆否定文では「…しては(いけないことになっている)」の意になる》.

ought to do

…すべきである， するのが当然［適切］である， …しなければならない∥ We ought to have her examined by a doctor. 彼女を医者にみてもらわなければならない.

▲She's meant to practice the piano for two hours. 彼女はピアノを2時間練習しなければならない / We were forced to work ［into working］ hard. 我々は(しかたなく)ひどく働かなければならなかった / This grass needs cutting. この芝は刈らなければならない / I am obliged to advise her. どうしても彼女に忠告せねばならない

②［禁止］

〔いけない， だめだ， …すべきでない〕
